Rethinking Schools for Teachers with Disabilities

Inclusive design in schools improves the well-being of educators, especially those with disabilities.

Educators play a critical role in shaping learning, yet their own experiences in school environments often go overlooked. Many live with disabilities, health conditions, or temporary limitations that affect how they navigate classrooms—ranging from mobility and sensory sensitivities to chronic pain and fatigue. These challenges, compounded by rising demands, contribute to stress, burnout, and retention issues with broad impacts. This course shares findings from an ASID Foundation-funded study on how inclusive design can better support educators. With insight into educator perspectives, participants will explore everyday barriers and how they shape strategies for designing new environments, adapting existing spaces, and advancing inclusive design. Learners will emerge with a deeper understanding of how empathy-driven, evidence-based methods can enhance well-being and performance, along with practical approaches to create healthier, more inclusive environments where teachers—and ultimately students—can thrive.
