The ASID Career Skills Certificate program is recommended for:

• Students within 6 months of graduating from an interior design program, beginning their search for their first professional job.
• Entry-level interior design professionals (5 years or less work experience) looking to improve their soft skills to enhance their career advancement and search for job opportunities.
• Design firms and employers within the interior design industry that need a quality onboarding program for new hires to help improve professionalism in the design workplace.

The estimated time frame for certificate completion is approximately 8 to 12 weeks depending on the individual. All courses in the ASID Career Skills Certificate program, regardless of delivery format (online asynchronous coursework, live webinar(s), and virtual or in-person sessions/meeting(s)) are graded as PASS/FAIL. All modules, learning activities, assignments, and final evaluation quizzes or projects must be completed, submitted, and received a PASS grade for each course to be considered “complete”. The courses are set in a predetermined order of completion to ensure knowledge comprehension and skills applications have met the educational competencies set for the learner to achieve. All pre-requisites must be completed and receive a PASS grade to move on to the next required course.

Webinar courses are offered at pre-scheduled dates and times for each program cohort and noted in the program information when registering. They are scheduled for the latter half of program (approximately 60 days out from the date of registration opening) for registrants to allow time for completion of pre-requisite courses and for ample advanced planning. Attendance is required for webinar courses; no exceptions. They will not be recorded. All webinar courses have a pre-work assignment and/or other learning activities that are expected to be completed in preparation for the webinar sessions. After the webinar, a post-session assignment is required for completion in order to receive a PASS grade.

For the Individual Coaching Sessions, once the pre-requisites are met, a Career Skills Coach is assigned to the student. The Coach and student will coordinate, plan, and schedule a minimum of 3 coaching sessions (virtual or live, approximately 30 minutes in length for each meeting) together. Topics of conversation in these coaching sessions correlate to each specific course. Students are expected to complete a pre-work assignment to prepare for each Coaching session, follow instructions for further exploration and learning post-session as advised by the Coach, and submit a final project or assignment demonstrating skills competency for course completion.

Online courses are self-paced for completion. We also recommend completing the online courses in the preset order of your learning path. All online courses have modular learning activities as knowledge checks, and a final assessment at the conclusion of each course that is graded PASS/FAIL.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: 

Acquiring new credentials and certifications helps you to stand out in a competitive industry and advance your career. This is a two-course topical component which offers an in-depth exploration of certifications, credentials, and cross-specialty skills for interior designers.

PART 1 - This course begins with an overview of career paths and design practice areas. We then introduce a diverse array of certificates and certifications available to designers, ranging from industry-specific accreditations to sustainable design credentials. This course will cover the most sought-after credentials to help you determine those most relevant to your career goals, including WELL (International Well Building Institute) and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) professional accreditations, and NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) certification for interior designers.

PART 2 - The knowledge learned in Part 1 will empower you to make informed decisions to formulate your professional development path. This course begins with an in-depth discussion of design specialties and practice areas, focusing on skills and knowledge applicable across all disciplines. You will gain insight into the role of a design generalist vs. specialist and the current industry trends utilizing interdisciplinary work in the built environment. This course provides the direction you need to assess your skills, experience, and interests to determine your career path and find your best fit within the design industry.

Transitioning to professional practice requires more than creative talent. It requires clear, confident communication skills. This foundational course equips recent graduates and emerging interior designers with the essential writing, verbal, and nonverbal communication skills needed to succeed in entry-level roles and early-career positions. In this course, you will learn how to communicate effectively with clients, supervisors, consultants, contractors, vendors, and others while building professional credibility. The course emphasizes practical, real-world applications such as writing professional emails, participating in meetings, presenting design ideas clearly, and understanding how body language and tone influence perception. This course will help you develop communication habits that reduce misunderstandings, strengthen collaboration, and support long-term career growth.

This course is designed to help interior design professionals strengthen one of the most essential skills in a collaborative, creative field - giving and receiving feedback with clarity, confidence, and care. Because design calls for ideation, execution, and iteration, designers must know how to communicate feedback in ways that support creativity, deepen collaboration, and maintain strong relationships with clients, colleagues, and leadership. You will discover how to create “brave spaces” for critique, listen with genuine curiosity, share feedback that is both clear and encouraging, and transform criticism into forward movement. This course focuses on the core mindset and communication practices designers need to make feedback professional and effective. Through short lessons, reflection prompts, and real-world scenarios, you will begin to identify how your own default patterns and internal stories shape the way you give and receive feedback. Making a good first impression as a considerate, responsible, and professional new employee and team member is critical as you begin your career as an interior designer. From day one, you want your manager and colleagues to know they can depend on you to get the job done and that you are there to help them succeed. As a new designer, you are not expected to know everything; what is most important is your eagerness to learn and willingness to ask questions. Showing up as a reliable, respectful, and positive team member will build trust and eventually lead to greater responsibilities, such as working directly with clients. Communicating professionally with your manager and colleagues demonstrates that you can effectively represent the firm when interacting with clients and other partners.

This course will walk you through the intricacies of interior design project phasing by analyzing the sequential stages of interior design projects. You will explore different aspects of the construction administration processes, including submittals, requests for information, value engineering, and change orders. From initial conceptualization to final installation, you will grasp the importance of strategic planning and seamless coordination throughout each phase of an interior design project.

This course offers an in-depth look at what to expect when starting your first professional position as a designer, directly from experienced and established interior designers, firm owners, industry partners/vendors, and others currently working in the field. Formatted into a 90-minute panel discussion webinar, they will share insights on starting out as a new designer, what are common expectations when hiring new designers for their organizations, and discuss the nuances of working on projects and serving on a project team, developing client relationships, supplier/vendor coordination and collaboration, and team dynamics in the workplace. This course will help you to gain a better understanding of what your day-to-day work life may typically involve. You will also learn how you can best contribute to an established project team across all phases of the design process, and to your firm or organization as the newly hired designer of the group. There will be a period of questions and answers so students can interact with the panelists to gain a deeper perspective.

Your Individual Roadmap

Now that you have learned about all your options as a new designer, which pathways will you choose to chart your own future career path? This course gives you the opportunity to explore and discuss them individually with your assigned Career Skills Coach. In your one-on-one meetings (minimum of 3 30-minute sessions are required) you will be able to ask detailed questions about career progression and pursuit. Your Coach will provide you with some good advice and direction on things to consider as you devise your pathway. At the conclusion of this course, you will have created an individual road map for your interior design career that serves as a checklist for your future.

Practice with Critiquing & Feedback

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

PRE-REQUISITE – Giving/Receiving Critiques and Feedback

One of the best ways to learn communication techniques is to practice them! Using the information learned in the preceding online course in the subject area, students will get some individual practice time with their assigned Career Skills Coach to simulate different situations both difficult and successful ones and practice their professional delivery. In your one-on-one meetings with your Coach (minimum of 3 30-minute sessions required), they will help you navigate each scenario and provide advice to develop critical thinking skills to use when the time arises that you need them. With professional communication methods providing critiques and feedback, there is not always a right or wrong approach in its delivery; however, when you communicate clearly, with purposeful intent, and consideration, the messages are better received, and you can foster collaborative collegial relationships. That comes with purposeful practice, developing growth mindset, and mindful readiness for your professional toolbox.

Your Professional Representation

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

PRE-REQUISITE: Representing Yourself & Your Firm Professionally

It’s your turn to create your own professional persona! In this course you work with your assigned Career Skills Coach to explore the qualities you have that will help you refine and develop a professional reputation from first day on the job to networking at events to project team dynamics. Your discussions with your Coach (minimum of 3 30-minutes sessions is required) will help you figure out where you can make some improvements and what you’ve already got going for you in the right direction that gives a positive first impression. In these meeting explorations of professionalism, your Coach will get into detail about the simplest of things such as manners, appropriate dining etiquette, and other little details in appearance, in and out of the workplace, including social media profiles, to advise you on how your professional representation can be improved. After these one-on-one meetings, you can attempt to apply what you have discovered about yourself in everyday interactions in the workplace and future situations where your professional reputation is important.
